Two Years of Border Checks on Germany’s Western Frontier: 8,500 Irregular Entrants & 277 Smugglers Caught
What began in October 2024 as an emergency response to rising irregular migration has, as of today, become a two-year routine on Germany’s borders with Luxembourg, Belgium and France. Bundespolizei figures released on 15 October 2026 show that officers in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland have registered roughly 8,500 unauthorised entries since controls were re-introduced. Around 5,300 people attempted to cross from France, 2,700 from Luxembourg and 550 from Belgium. Nearly 4,000 were turned back to France, 1,800 to Luxembourg and 335 to Belgium. Equally striking is the enforcement haul: 277 suspected smugglers arrested and more than 1,000 individuals with outstanding warrants picked up at the border. The controls – which remain an exception under the Schengen Borders Code – were tightened further after Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) took over the Interior portfolio, and are now slated to run until at least March 2027. The extension continues to rile cross-border commuters who face queues and police checks on what used to be friction-free journeys to work in Luxembourg’s booming finance sector. More than 50,000 German residents commute daily to the Grand Duchy; business lobbies warn that delays are costing billable hours and undermining the promise of a ‘Single Market without borders’. Politically, Berlin argues that the measure is still necessary to choke off smuggling networks and to apply the EU’s new Common European Asylum System at the border. Legal challenges are pending, however, with critics contending that the multiyear prolongation violates the ‘temporary’ spirit of Schengen derogations. The European Commission has asked Germany to justify each six-month renewal with a fresh risk assessment – a paper trail that is growing ever thicker. For global mobility managers the update is a reminder that the western land borders cannot be taken for granted. International assignees living in France or Luxembourg and working in Germany (or vice versa) should carry passports, residence permits and proof of assignment when crossing. Companies should build buffer time into travel schedules and review cross-border tax equalisation policies, as days spent queuing on one side of the frontier may affect payroll sourcing rules. Logistics teams moving high-value goods through the Trier and Saarbrücken corridors should expect sporadic stops and factor potential waiting times into just-in-time supply chains. Looking ahead, the March 2027 sunset date could still shift if the security situation—or political incentives—change again. Employers with large commuter populations should keep advocacy channels open with federal and state authorities and continue to document any productivity losses linked to the checks.
