France Tightens Border Checks with Belgium amid Security Alert
Travellers moving between Belgium and France faced fresh scrutiny on 20 October 2026 after the Australian Government’s updated travel advisory for France confirmed “increased checks and controls” at France’s land borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. The advisory echoes Paris’s decision earlier this month to prolong internal Schengen-area border controls until at least 30 April 2027, citing persistent terrorism threats, migrant-smuggling networks and a spike in antisemitic attacks. For cross-border commuters and multinational firms with operations straddling the Lille-Kortrijk-Brussels corridor, the renewed checks translate to longer queues on the E17 and E19 motorways and sporadic ID controls on Thalys and TGV services. Logistics operators report average transit delays of 30–45 minutes, forcing some just-in-time supply chains to add buffer hours or reroute via the Netherlands. Eurostar trains are currently unaffected but remain subject to French police spot-checks at Brussels-Midi. Although Schengen rules allow internal border controls only as a last resort, France has maintained continuous extensions since 2015. Belgium’s Foreign Ministry advises its citizens to carry passports or national ID cards even on day trips and reminds employers that non-EU assignees must have their residence permits on hand. Companies running frequent cross-border assignments should audit compliance documentation and factor potential delays into mobility planning, particularly for shift workers scheduled to clock in on the French side. Tax and social-security implications are limited – the temporary controls do not affect the right of residence or the 183-day rule – but extended queues could push some daily commuters over the 50-percent telework threshold that triggers Belgian payroll withholding. HR teams should therefore monitor days-worked-abroad metrics if controls persist beyond winter. At Brussels Airport, federal police say they are ready to assist French counterparts should Paris request joint patrols, but no additional outbound checks are planned for now. Mobility advisers nevertheless recommend allowing extra time when connecting through French hubs or driving rental vehicles across the border until the security posture is scaled back.
