Nation-Wide Airport Security Strike Grounds All Outbound Flights in Belgium
Belgian airports awoke to an unprecedented stand-still on Monday, 19 October 2026, after the country’s three major trade-union confederations (ACV/CSC, ABVV/FGTB and ACLVB/CGSLB) coordinated a 24-hour walk-out of aviation security screeners, ramp baggage handlers and refuelling crews. With no legally-required minimum staffing levels available to operate passenger screening lanes, Brussels Airport (BRU) and Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) cancelled 100 percent of scheduled outbound flights, affecting an estimated 45,000 departing travellers. Regional hubs in Liège, Ostend-Bruges and Antwerp followed suit, while inbound services faced selective diversions to Lille, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam-Schiphol and Paris CDG. The dispute centres on stalled national collective-bargaining talks over inflation indexing, 24/7 staffing ratios and sick-leave protection for security personnel. Union leaders say ground staff wages have failed to keep pace with Belgium’s cost-of-living index, eroding purchasing power by 7 percent since 2024. Airport operators counter that margins remain squeezed by energy costs and pandemic-era debt. Talks mediated by the Federal Public Service Employment collapsed late Sunday, triggering the strike notice. From 06:00 CEST, federal police sealed terminal entrances to departing passengers, urging would-be travellers to rebook or reroute by high-speed rail. Airlines invoked European Regulation EC 261/2004 “duty-of-care” provisions: Brussels Airlines, Ryanair, Lufthansa, British Airways and KLM offered free rebooking through 26 October or full refunds. Eurostar, TGV inOui and Deutsche Bahn added carriages to absorb displaced traffic on the Brussels-London-Paris-Amsterdam-Frankfurt corridors. Business-travel managers scrambled to update mobility policies. Multinationals with Benelux headquarters instructed assignees to depart via Amsterdam or Düsseldorf and to carry only cabin baggage because ramp staff were unavailable to off-load checked luggage. Logistics operators, however, kept night-freighter movements running at BRU’s cargo zone, highlighting the strike’s narrow focus on passenger operations. Although the walk-out was limited to 24 hours, analysts warn that failure to reach a wage-indexation compromise could see rolling stoppages during the peak All Saints’ holiday week. Employers should build contingencies—extra Schengen visa days, flexible rail-air routings and EU261 budget reserves—into upcoming travel itineraries.
