After a weekend of violent protests over living costs, the French Interior Ministry has ordered targeted night-time curfews in major urban centres, a measure Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu says will last “as long as necessary”. According to reports from the Los Angeles Times (20 October) and The Independent (21 October), zones around Paris’ Place de la République, Les Halles and sections of Lyon’s Presqu’île are now off-limits to the public from roughly 9-10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Marseille has imposed a 9 p.m.–6 a.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors in key shopping districts. For business travellers, the restrictions mean metro stations in affected areas close early, ride-hailing services face police checkpoints, and hotel guests must show proof of residence if stopped after curfew. The Paris police prefecture confirmed that exemptions apply to travellers holding an airline or rail ticket for departures during curfew hours, but they must carry both passport and proof of itinerary. Many conference organisers shifted evening networking events online or advanced them to late afternoon. Employers relocating staff should also review duty-of-care policies: curfews can change at short notice, and violators risk fines of up to €135. Security consultants advise routing transfers via stations outside restricted perimeters—e.g., Gare Montparnasse rather than Châtelet—and booking accommodation in districts not subject to nightly lockdowns. The Interior Ministry is expected to reassess the measures after planned protests on 24 October; further tightening could include early-evening retail shutdowns. Companies with field engineers or sales teams on late shifts should provide attestation letters and arrange corporate car services where feasible until the situation stabilises.
