Indian Embassy in UAE Overhauls Appointment System for Passport, Visa and OCI Services
The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi issued a ‘Latest News’ bulletin on 21 October announcing backend changes to its consular-services platform covering passport renewals, visa endorsement and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card processing. Although outwardly subtle, the upgrade merges previously separate appointment calendars for the Embassy and the Consulate-General in Dubai, allowing applicants to see real-time availability at both posts before locking a slot. New features include SMS and WhatsApp notifications 72 hours and 24 hours prior to the appointment, plus barcode-based entry passes that can be scanned at the gate—ending long queues caused by manual verification. Applicants can also reschedule once without paying a fresh fee, provided they do so at least 48 hours before the original time. For India’s 3.5 million-strong diaspora in the UAE—the largest overseas Indian community—these tweaks matter. Peak-season demand around December often saw passport renewals booked out for six weeks. Embassy officials told local media the consolidated calendar should cut the average wait to under 15 days and slash no-show rates. The portal now integrates with the Government of India’s e-OCI system launched earlier this year, meaning OCI cardholders updating passport details no longer need a separate embassy appointment unless biometric capture is required. Indian professionals planning year-end home leave should, however, check that their new e-OCI acknowledgement is visible on the portal before booking flights; airlines are denying boarding if old passport numbers remain on record. Corporate-mobility teams moving staff between India and Gulf operations must alert travellers to the one-time reschedule rule—missing a slot could delay exit permits needed for role changes under UAE labour law. The Embassy says further enhancements, including online payment of attestations, will roll out by January 2027.
