Finnair launches Muscat–Helsinki “rescue shuttle” to repatriate 1,200 passengers stranded in Dubai

Finnair has announced an extraordinary series of flights between Muscat, Oman and Helsinki after mounting regional security concerns forced the airline to suspend its scheduled Dubai and Doha services on 28 February 2026. The decision left more than 1,200 Finnair customers—many of them business travellers returning from the Gulf Construction Expo and IT security fairs—stranded in the United Arab Emirates just as the region’s air‐space began to shrink under escalating conflict. According to the airline, the first special flight (AY 8921) is tentatively slated for 10 March, subject to a joint safety assessment by Omani, Finnish and Eurocontrol authorities. Additional rotations will be added “later in the week” if military risk levels permit. Travellers will be bussed the 430 km from Dubai to Muscat under police escort before boarding wide-body A350s chartered for the operation. Finnair is prioritising vulnerable customers—including families with small children, the elderly and those requiring medical assistance—before releasing remaining seats on a first-booked, first-served basis. Passengers have been asked to confirm participation via the airline’s digital chat service; telephone bookings are suspended to avoid overloading call-centres. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Helsinki says it is working closely with the carrier and has opened an emergency hotline for Finns elsewhere in the Gulf who may need onward travel options. For corporate mobility managers, the episode underlines three critical lessons: maintain up-to-date traveller tracking data, embed contingency clauses in supplier contracts that cover ad-hoc charters, and ensure employees in high-risk regions have valid multi-entry visas for neighbouring safe hubs (in this case, Oman and Qatar).
