Stansted Airport disability-assist strike suspended after last-minute pay offer
Business-travel disruption over the UK’s early-May bank-holiday period has been averted after Unite suspended a planned walk-out by 100 ABM staff who provide assistance to passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) at London Stansted. According to the UK Strike Action Calendar, the strike—scheduled for 3–6 May—was formally “SUSPENDED” on 5 May 2026 to allow members to ballot on an improved pay deal. The action would have coincided with one of the year’s busiest outbound leisure weekends and risked cascading delays, as every flight carrying mobility-impaired travellers would have required ad-hoc manual boarding arrangements. ABM workers say the previous offer left some staff earning £12.10 an hour, below the Real Living Wage for the East of England. While details of the revised package have not been published, Unite described it as “a material step forward”. If members reject the proposal, a fresh strike mandate could see industrial action later in May, the union warned. For mobility managers the case is a reminder that PRM services—often outsourced and with limited staffing buffers—can become a single point of failure. Companies moving employees who need assistance should continue to pre-book support and build longer minimum connection times at Stansted for the remainder of the month. Airlines are reviewing contingency rosters and may redeploy staff to avoid boarding delays if the ballot fails. The episode also highlights a broader trend: industrial disputes in ‘hidden’ airport functions (cleaning, security, special assistance) are increasingly leveraged during peak travel windows, forcing employers to weigh reputational damage against pay inflation. Travel-risk teams should track union ballots across other UK airports—Unite confirmed separate talks are underway with contractors at Birmingham and Bristol.
