A CBSA review found that the crossing averaged only 8,000 travellers per season and sits within 25 km of two 24-hour alternatives: Andover and Gillespie Portage. Four Falls had historically operated from mid-April to mid-October, serving cottage traffic and limited commercial flows between northern Maine and western New Brunswick. U.S. Customs and Border Protection never reactivated its adjacent facilities after 2020, leaving the Canadian side effectively orphaned. CBSA says aligning with the U.S. closure avoids staffing inefficiencies and frees resources for higher-volume crossings in Atlantic Canada. For local residents and tourism operators, the decision means a permanent 15- to 30-minute detour to the next open port. While personal cross-border errands will be inconvenienced, the impact on commercial trucking is expected to be minimal; most carriers already route through Andover, which offers full customs-broker services and commercial processing lanes. From a global-mobility perspective, companies moving technicians or seasonal staff between Maine pulp-and-paper mills and New Brunswick facilities should update travel protocols and GPS routings. CBSA advises travellers to verify operating hours of nearby crossings and to consult its online Directory of Offices and Services before departure. Nexus card holders can continue to use dedicated lanes at Andover; no programme changes are anticipated. The permanent closure is part of CBSA’s wider post-pandemic infrastructure rationalisation. Industry groups expect additional reviews of low-volume seasonal ports in Quebec and Saskatchewan as the agency balances budget pressures with evolving travel patterns.
