Hong Kong International Airport’s new Terminal 2 begins phased airline move-in
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has formally switched on the departures facilities in its rebuilt Terminal 2 (T2), ushering in the first major operational change at the hub since the pandemic era. Although the glass-and-steel structure opened to the public on 27 May, the impact on corporate travellers became tangible on 2 June when Hong Kong Airlines processed 36 outbound flights from the new hall and marked the start of a 10-day migration covering 15 mainly short-haul carriers. Under the Airport Authority’s plan, AirAsia group airlines, Greater Bay Airlines, IndiGo, Cebu Pacific and several regional operators will progressively relocate check-in desks from Terminal 1 to the 300,000 m² building. Long-haul full-service airlines, led by home carrier Cathay Pacific, will continue to use T1 until the dedicated T2 Concourse with 27 gates comes online in 2027. During the interim phase, passengers will check in and clear security in T2, ride the automated people-mover to T1 for boarding, and reclaim baggage at the existing arrivals hall. For mobility managers, the shift requires urgent updates to traveller communications and ground-handling instructions. Travellers booked on the affected 15 carriers must verify their departure terminal in airline apps or on boarding passes, and transport providers must adjust drop-off points to the new kerbside on Airport Express Level L6.

For those navigating the new terminal arrangements, it is equally important to make sure travel documentation is in order. VisaHQ’s Hong Kong portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) offers quick visa checks, application support and real-time status updates, helping corporate travellers and travel managers avoid last-minute surprises while passing through HKIA.

While landside facilities already include 160 counters, self bag-drop units and biometric e-security gates that can shave 25 % off typical processing times, the need to travel onward to T1 gates will add roughly 10 minutes to journey time. The T2 project is also a strategic signal for Hong Kong’s post-pandemic recovery. The airport handled 61 million passengers in 2025—about 72 % of its 2019 record—and the three-runway system anchored by T2 will eventually lift annual capacity to 120 million. Airport executives told Business Traveller that the terminal’s design anticipates peak mainland-Greater Bay traffic, with direct connection to cross-boundary coaches and the Airport Express, and with e-channel immigration prepared for 100 % biometric clearance. Travel buyers should review corporate rates with the carriers concerned; many have inserted flexibility clauses to offset possible confusion during the transition. Companies relocating staff through Hong Kong this summer should build in slightly longer minimum connection times and remind travellers that arrivals, transfers and lounge access remain in Terminal 1 until further notice.
