Lane repairs at Medyka checkpoint to cut bus capacity, travellers urged to reroute
Polish and Ukrainian border-guard authorities have jointly warned coach operators and passengers that traffic through the busy Shehyni–Medyka land crossing will slow sharply from the morning of Monday, 15 June. According to a notice circulated by Poland’s National Revenue Administration and confirmed by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, contractors will rip up and relay two of the four bus-processing lanes on the Polish side of the gate. During the works only a single bi-directional lane will remain open for coaches heading into Poland, reducing hourly throughput from roughly 40 vehicles to an estimated eight over a 12-hour shift.

For travellers who still need to make the trip, VisaHQ can at least take the paperwork off their hands: its Poland page (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) walks individual tourists, migrant workers, and corporate travel managers through every step of the visa process, offers real-time status tracking, and ensures that supporting documents are in order before anyone reaches the frontier.

Medyka is the most heavily used coach crossing on the 535-kilometre Polish-Ukrainian frontier. On peak summer weekends more than 450 buses and 25,000 passengers normally clear the post, many of them labour migrants shuttling between EU jobs and homes in western Ukraine. Contractors will stage the works—but officials admit that even with night shifts the resurfacing will last “several weeks”. The reduced capacity coincides with the first major holiday exodus since Poland tightened land-border checks last autumn. Carriers face higher diesel prices and tight driver hours, so the detour via Korczowa – Krakovets or Hrebenne – Rava-Ruska, both 75 km north of Medyka, will add at least two hours to Warsaw–Lviv schedules. Freight forwarders say companies that rely on driver-accompanied trucks should also expect delays because buses and lorries share passport booths on the Ukrainian side. Travel-management firms are advising corporate clients to re-book staff onto rail services or LOT’s multiple daily flights between Lviv and Warsaw while the works continue. Insurance brokers remind companies that EU Regulation 261 compensation does not apply to land borders, so extra hotel and driver costs will fall on employers. For small exporters the bottleneck is a timely reminder to stagger shipments and to register drivers in Poland’s e-Cherha virtual queuing system before dispatching vehicles. Both border agencies have promised daily updates via Telegram and the granica.gov.pl portal, but concede that queue length will ultimately depend on passenger behaviour and weather.
