On the heels of Passport Seva Divas, the Ministry of External Affairs has issued fresh guidance on India’s next-generation chip-enabled ePassports, confirming that most Passport Seva Kendras are now technically ready to issue the documents during fresh or renewed applications. Each booklet carries an ICAO-compliant RFID chip storing the holder’s biographic and biometric data, protected by Public-Key Infrastructure. At automated e-gates the chip enables near-instant verification, reducing immigration-queue times and mitigating fraud. Existing passports remain valid until expiry; applicants will receive an ePassport automatically once their local PSK or POPSK is upgraded. No additional fee has been prescribed beyond the newly revised passport charges.

To help applicants take advantage of the new system, VisaHQ offers end-to-end assistance with passport renewals and fresh applications, including PSK appointment scheduling and document pre-screening; their dedicated India portal (https://www.visahq.com/india/) also lets corporate travel managers track multiple cases from a single dashboard, ensuring employees receive their ePassports with minimal downtime.

For global mobility programmes the upgrade brings tangible benefits: faster arrivals at e-gate-equipped hubs (e.g., Singapore, Dubai, Frankfurt) and lower secondary-inspection risk for Indian frequent flyers. Employers should encourage travellers to check for the gold ePassport logo on new booklets and store them away from magnetic fields that could corrupt RFID chips. The MEA says more than 4 million ePassports have already been issued in a controlled deployment that started in 2025, and expects full national coverage by December 2026. Border agencies worldwide will receive updated Public Key Directory certificates to read Indian chips, an important compliance step for carriers subject to carrier-liability fines. Travel-management companies should update profile fields to flag employees holding ePassports so that airlines can direct them to automated gates, and HR departments may wish to subsidise early renewals for VIP executives who travel weekly.
