EU Entry/Exit System Sparks Fears of Airport Gridlock Ahead of Austrian Summer Holidays

EU Entry/Exit System Sparks Fears of Airport Gridlock Ahead of Austrian Summer Holidays
With school holidays only days away, Austrian travel agencies are warning clients to brace for queues at major EU hubs after the new Entry/Exit System (EES) recorded its first serious meltdowns in Paris and Lisbon this week. The biometric regime, which captures fingerprints and facial images of every non-EU traveller, went live on 15 June. Although Vienna International Airport handled the rollout smoothly thanks to months of testing, partner airports where Austrians frequently change planes are struggling. Industry association ÖRV told the eXXpress newspaper that some Austrian families missed onward connections after kiosks froze and staff reverted to manual processing, extending the promised 70-second check to over 20 minutes per passenger. Rome-Fiumicino and Madrid-Barajas have asked Brussels for permission to suspend full capture during peak hours; EU rules allow a temporary ‘light-touch’ mode if waiting times jeopardise operations. Airlines are sounding the alarm. Austrian Airlines said it is advising premium customers to leave at least three hours between flights involving a non-Schengen leg. Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has already adjusted turnaround schedules on Vienna-London routes, citing “persistent border-automation delays”. Corporate‐travel managers are updating duty-of-care guidance and telling expatriates returning from business trips to scan passports—and fingers—well ahead of boarding.

Longer term, the technology promises faster, more secure borders.

Travellers anxious about the new requirements don’t have to navigate the red tape alone. VisaHQ’s Austrian portal (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) offers up-to-the-minute advice on EES and the forthcoming ETIAS, personalised document checklists and an expedited courier service, helping families or business passengers ensure their paperwork and biometric enrolments are in order well before arriving at the airport.

Once enrolled, travellers can, in theory, pass automated gates in seconds across the entire Schengen Area, including Austria. The immediate risk, however, is reputational: a chaotic first summer could undermine public confidence just months before the sister ETIAS travel-authorisation system launches. Mobility teams should monitor real-time airport dashboards, build larger buffers into itineraries and encourage staff to download carriers’ rebooking apps before departure.
