Record 10,000 SkillSelect invitations issued ahead of new program year
The Department of Home Affairs quietly released the results of its 4 June SkillSelect draw overnight, confirming 10,000 invitations for the coveted Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa—the largest single round since 2023. The invitation list, published by migration-analytics firm Y-Axis and updated on 27 June, shows minimum scores ranging from 65 points for trades such as carpenters and electricians to 100 points for niche medical specialists. Why now? Officials regularly load a large ‘clean-up’ round at the end of each program year to mop up unused places and reset occupation ceilings.

If you’re trying to work out where your own Expression of Interest stands—or whether you should pivot to another visa class—VisaHQ can step in with real-time guidance on points calculations, occupation ceilings and documentation, all via its Australian portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/). The platform’s concierge service helps both individuals and HR teams assemble error-free applications quickly, cutting down on costly delays.

With the new 2026-27 ceiling staying flat at 185,000 places but shifting sharply toward on-shore applicants, the Department appears to be clearing the decks so that July invitation rounds can focus on the forthcoming, re-weighted points test. The size and composition of the round carry several take-aways for mobility and talent leaders. First, points competitiveness remains intense in white-collar and STEM roles: engineers and IT specialists needed at least 95 points. Second, the Government’s continuing focus on the construction supply-chain is evident in the 65-point cut-off for multiple building trades—good news for EPC contractors scrambling for labour. Third, the tie-break date of 24 April 2026 signals that recent Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are already in the frame; candidates lodging after that date should not expect an invitation until at least Q4. Employers that sponsor staff on Subclass 482 visas should check whether high-scoring employees received an unsolicited invitation—acceptance converts them to PR within six months and removes the need for continued sponsorship obligations. Conversely, HR teams with critical expatriates sitting below the invitation score will need to weigh state nomination or employer-sponsored PR pathways under the new income-threshold rules starting 1 July. International graduates should note that many health-care, social-services and teaching occupations also featured, aligning with Jobs and Skills Australia’s priority-list. Expect those sectors to remain front-of-mind when the redesigned points test is unveiled later in the year.
