Major Track Works Will Shut Austria–Italy Brenner Rail Corridor for Two Weeks in July
ÖBB has announced two consecutive construction phases that will close large sections of the Brenner line between Innsbruck and Bolzano from 18 July to 1 August 2026. The works include emergency repairs to frost damage in the Mühltaltunnel as well as signalling upgrades required for the forthcoming Brenner Base Tunnel interface.

If you’re one of the thousands who will need to reroute through neighboring countries during the closure, make sure your travel documents are in order first. VisaHQ’s Austria page (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) lets you check visa requirements in seconds and submit applications online, smoothing the way for last-minute itinerary changes whether you’re a rail passenger, a coach driver, or a logistics manager arranging cross-border freight.

During the first phase, all regional trains will terminate at Gries am Brenner because Italian infrastructure works prevent entry to Brenner station; the second phase extends the blockade northwards to Innsbruck Hbf, halting long-distance services. ÖBB and Trenitalia will replace passenger services with a coordinated bus network, but journey times between Tyrol and South Tyrol are expected to increase by up to two hours. Freight operators face detours via the Tauern or Tarvisio corridors, both of which are already capacity-constrained during the summer peak. Logistics associations warn of knock-on effects for just-in-time automotive supply chains that rely on the north-south axis. The Brenner route carries about 40 percent of all trans-Alpine rail freight and up to 35,000 passengers per day. ÖBB argues that short, concentrated closures are more efficient than a year-long series of night-time speed restrictions. The company recommends that business travellers holding rail passes re-book via Munich–Verona flights or consider Nightjet services through Switzerland where feasible. Once completed, the maintenance will raise axle-load limits and clearances, enabling the line to handle heavier freight trains until the Brenner Base Tunnel opens in late 2028. Mobility planners say the summer disruption is a “necessary pain” that will ultimately improve resilience on Europe’s key north-south rail spine.
