Navi Mumbai International Airport notified as India’s 38th immigration post
The Union Home Ministry has issued a Gazette notification designating the Adani-developed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) as an authorised immigration check-point for entry into and exit from India under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. The order, published on 30 June, clears the final regulatory hurdle for the greenfield hub—India’s second airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region—to handle scheduled international passenger and cargo flights from 15 July. For business travellers, the move ends Mumbai’s single-airport bottleneck. NMIA’s first phase promises six e-gates equipped for biometric entry/exit and dedicated lanes for e-Visa and FastTrack Travellers Programme (FTI-TTP) members. Adani Airport Holdings expects daily footfall to rise from the current 20,000 domestic passengers to 50,000 once international services ramp up, with 380 aircraft movements a day by year-end. Corporates with operations in Navi Mumbai, Pune and the fast-growing Mumbai–Pune logistics corridor can now shave up to 90 minutes off ground transfers compared with the congested Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Freight forwarders also anticipate lower dwell times as customs and immigration will operate 24×7 in an integrated cargo village.

Whether you’re a logistics manager rushing to clinch a same-day contract or an expat executive heading in for project kick-off, navigating the updated list of valid ports of entry can be daunting. VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/india/) tracks these regulatory tweaks in real time and lets travellers choose the correct airport code—now including NMI—while completing e-Visa or passport-service applications, sparing companies costly rework and itinerary disruption.

Travel-management companies should update booking tools to reflect the new airport code (NMI) and ensure that employee profiles list the correct port of entry when applying for Indian visas or e-Visa approvals. Airlines are expected to announce inaugural long-haul routes to Dubai, Singapore and Frankfurt once bilateral seat allocations are cleared. Beyond commercial convenience, NMIA’s notification aligns with India’s strategy of expanding its network of designated land, sea and air immigration posts—now numbering 38 airports—to accommodate record inbound flows that topped 20.6 million arrivals in 2024.
