CBSA warns of prolonged delays at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle as major redevelopment begins
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) updated its real-time Border Wait Times page on the morning of 7 July 2026, flagging the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle crossing in Québec for construction-related slow-downs expected to last until Winter 2027. The port is Canada’s busiest land entry point east of Windsor-Detroit, handling more than two million cars and 150,000 trucks annually. Redevelopment includes expanding primary inspection lanes, installing next-generation biometric kiosks and upgrading the Commercial Vehicle Processing Centre. During the build, several lanes will be closed, and commercial traffic will be re-routed to the adjacent Champlain, NY / St-Armand, QC port during peak hours. For business travellers and cross-border trucking companies, the timing couldn’t be worse: July and August are historically the heaviest tourism months and a peak period for fresh-produce imports.

VisaHQ can also step in when border delays coincide with last-minute immigration paperwork: the firm’s online platform lets travelers and corporate mobility teams complete visa or eTA applications in minutes, track status updates, and get live support, all from a single dashboard—visit to see how its services can keep people moving despite the construction bottlenecks.

Logistics providers are already advising shippers to budget an extra 30–45 minutes per crossing and to use the CBSA Advance Declaration app to shave minutes off primary inspection. Employers moving staff between Montréal and U.S. eastern seaboard offices should consider rerouting through the Stanstead–Derby Line or Cornwall crossings, both of which currently report single-digit wait times. Nexus and FAST cardholders will retain dedicated lanes, but periodic closures are possible. CBSA says real-time wait data will continue to update every 20 minutes; mobility managers are encouraged to integrate the agency’s API into travel-management systems to push alerts directly to employees’ phones.
