Foreign Office publishes traveller guidance on EES and ETIAS
The German Federal Foreign Office quietly updated its consular portal on 9 July with a new factsheet explaining the forthcoming Entry/Exit System (EES) and European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). The page – aimed at Australian residents but applicable worldwide – is the first official consumer-facing document to confirm that ETIAS remains scheduled for “the last quarter of 2026”, despite widespread speculation about further delays. The ministry reiterates that travellers do not need to take any action at present; applications will only open once the European Commission formally announces a start date.

For travellers and employers who prefer to prepare well in advance, VisaHQ can bridge the gap by providing real-time updates and application assistance for ETIAS, Schengen visas, and other German entry formalities. Its user-friendly portal lets you sign up for alerts, pre-populate forms and manage multiple travellers in one dashboard—an easy way to stay ready while waiting for the Commission to open the official system.

It also warns that EES, which has been fully operational at German airports since 10 April 2026, can lead to longer waiting times at passport control and recommends arriving early and using self-service kiosks where available. For mobility and relocation teams the guidance is a useful link to include in pre-departure packs, ensuring that assignees understand the difference between EES (automatic recording at the border) and ETIAS (online travel authorisation to be obtained before departure). The page will be updated “continuously” as further details emerge, according to the consulate. Companies should note that ETIAS will apply to business travellers from visa-waiver countries such as Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom; holders of German residence permits will be exempt when returning to Germany.
