UK-Switzerland services accord guarantees 90-day visa-free business travel and five-year staff transfers
Britain and Switzerland have clinched what ministers describe as “the most significant services trade deal the UK has ever negotiated.” According to Reuters reporting carried by Euronext on 13 July, the accord will allow finance, legal, architectural and other services professionals to spend up to 90 days a year in each other’s territory without a work visa and to transfer intracompany staff for up to five years without economic-needs tests.

Businesses navigating the transition period should note that VisaHQ can shoulder much of the administrative burden. Through its UK portal the company tracks Swiss and British entry policies in real time, produces tailored documentation checklists and even manages group submissions, giving HR teams the clarity they need to plan short-term trips or longer intracompany transfers with confidence.

The agreement modernises a post-Brexit goods-focused treaty rolled over from EU days, adding chapters on digital trade, intellectual-property protection and professional mobility. UK officials estimate the deal could boost exports by £5.2 billion annually and lift overall bilateral trade by 25 percent. In a consumer-friendly concession, both sides plan to scrap mobile-roaming surcharges and—symbolically—Switzerland will let UK nationals use automated e-gates at Zurich and Geneva airports. For HR and mobility departments the headline win is predictability. Visa-free stays of up to three months align the Swiss régime with the EU’s post-Brexit 90/180-day rule, simplifying itinerary planning for consultants who often hop between Zurich, Frankfurt and London. The five-year transfer window is even more generous than the UK’s own ‘Global Business Mobility—Senior or Specialist Worker’ route, cutting red tape for banks that rotate staff among European hubs. The pact still needs to be signed and ratified, a process expected to stretch into late 2026, but both governments say interim implementing measures could take effect as early as Q1 2027. Companies should therefore begin auditing assignment policies, especially around posted-worker notifications, to ensure they can capitalise on the new flexibilities once in force.
