Cable damage paralyses four key Brussels tram corridors
Commuters and summer visitors faced hours-long delays on 13 July after an overhead-line failure near Place Poelaert forced Brussels public-transport operator STIB-MIVB to suspend sections of tram routes 8, 81, 92 and 93. The incident, which occurred just after 14:00, cut a vital north-south surface link between the EU quarter, Ixelles and the Louise business district at the peak of afternoon travel. Emergency ‘T-bus’ replacements were able to cover only part of the disrupted axes, leaving many passengers scrambling for ride-shares or e-bikes. For corporate mobility managers the timing could hardly be worse: July typically sees an uptick in conference tourism and EU meetings before the traditional summer recess. Several firms with offices around Avenue Louise reported missed client appointments and rescheduled interviews. Hotels near Place Stéphanie saw check-in queues lengthen as guests arrived late from Brussels-Midi station. STIB engineers worked into the night to isolate the damaged catenary section, but by press time were unable to estimate when normal service would resume. Early indications suggest that heat-related metal expansion may have played a role, although the precise cause remains under investigation. Until repairs are completed, businesses reliant on just-in-time deliveries along the tram routes are advised to shift to alternative logistics corridors. The disruption highlights the fragility of the capital’s ageing tram infrastructure, which carries more than 300,000 passengers daily and increasingly competes with road traffic for limited corridor space. A €1.2 billion modernisation plan approved in 2025 – including the gradual transition to ground-power supply on the busiest lines – is only in its early stages, meaning further unplanned outages remain a risk. Travellers can monitor live updates via the STIB app or Twitter feed @stibmivb. Mobility-as-a-service platforms such as Skipr and Whim are also integrating the alert, offering multimodal alternatives that combine metro, shared bikes and walking for the last mile.
