Technical issue forces Corendon flight to return to Brussels, highlighting passenger-communication gaps
Corendon Airlines flight XR5401 from Brussels to Hurghada was forced to turn back on 13 July after the crew reported a technical anomaly over southern Germany. The Airbus A320 (reg. LY-LGA) landed safely at Brussels Airport with emergency services on standby; no injuries were reported. What angered the 180 passengers was not the diversion itself – standard safety protocol requires a return to the nearest suitable airport – but the information blackout that followed. Several travellers told Belgian media they waited hours for details on re-routing and accommodation. Social-media posts show long queues in the terminal and complaints that ground staff provided only minimal updates. The replacement flight eventually departed more than 26 hours late, arriving in Egypt shortly before midnight on 14 July. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, airlines must provide meals, hotel rooms and timely information when flights are significantly delayed; travellers may also qualify for compensation unless the carrier proves the fault lay beyond its control. Aviation lawyers note that “technical problems detected during routine operations” rarely count as extraordinary circumstances. Companies with duty-of-care obligations should therefore brief staff on their rights and keep local assistance numbers handy when contracting leisure carriers for incentive trips or project rotations. For Brussels Airport, the incident is another reminder of the importance of robust crisis-communication plans at the height of the summer season. The airport handled the operational side smoothly, but passenger perception is shaped largely by information flow – an area where smaller carriers often underperform. Travel-risk managers may wish to monitor carrier-reliability scores and build alternative routings into itineraries for time-sensitive travellers.
