IRCC refreshes guidance on extending or changing Canadian work permits
Also on 17 July, IRCC revised the public-facing page that explains how temporary foreign workers can extend a permit or switch employers. While the policy fundamentals remain unchanged, the update reorganises content into easier navigation blocks, adds a prominent 30-day filing reminder and clarifies when maintained status applies—key details that global mobility managers have long said were buried in the fine print. The refreshed layout walks applicants through eligibility, online form tips and what to do if biometric appointments or medical exams cause delays. A new pop-up alert reminds workers who want to change to an open work-permit category (such as vulnerable-worker permits) that they must stop working for the current employer until interim authorisation is issued—a compliance risk often overlooked by human-resources teams. IRCC has also embedded a dedicated section on “Travel Outside Canada While Your Extension Is Pending.” It spells out that re-entry on a work permit that has technically expired but benefits from maintained status is not guaranteed, urging travellers to carry proof of the pending application and be prepared for discretionary decisions by CBSA officers at the airport. For employers, the clearer instructions mean fewer last-minute extension panics and a reduced chance that an assignee slides into unauthorized status, which can trigger corporate non-compliance penalties. Many immigration counsel plan to circulate the revised link to line managers and payroll teams this week.
