French health-authority bulletin links June–July heatwave to 3,400 excess deaths

A national bulletin released by Santé publique France on 22 July 2026 provides the first comprehensive assessment of the lethal heat episode that scorched the country between 17 June and 2 July. Using civil-registry data, epidemiologists estimate 3,381 excess deaths—a figure 27 % higher than during the comparable 2025 event—and note that 98.5 % of mainland residents experienced at least three consecutive days above local heat-alert thresholds. Île-de-France suffered the greatest absolute toll (1,999 excess deaths, +81 %), followed by Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. While the elderly remain most vulnerable, the report flags a sharp rise in working-age victims, many of whom were employed outdoors or in non-climatized warehouses. International companies operating in logistics and construction are urged to revisit shift patterns and hydration protocols; labour inspectors will conduct spot checks throughout August. For global mobility teams the findings matter on two fronts. First, insurance providers already treat ‘extreme heat’ as a named peril; premiums for expatriate medical cover in France could rise by up to 12 % next renewal cycle. Second, visa holders on temporary duty assignments must show proof of adequate health cover—costlier policies may nudge up assignment budgets. The health ministry reiterated its advice for travellers: schedule outdoor activities before 11:00 or after 18:00, stay in air-conditioned spaces at least three hours a day, and call the emergency number 15 at the first sign of heat stroke. The government is also fast-tracking a nationwide roll-out of cooled ‘islands’ in major train stations, including Gare Montparnasse and Lyon Part-Dieu, to protect transiting passengers.
