Daily passenger-traffic data show record summer surge across Hong Kong control points
Open-data figures released by the Immigration Department on 23 July recorded the highest single-day passenger throughput of 2026 so far, as 764,000 inbound and outbound trips were logged across land, sea and air checkpoints on Monday. The dataset, updated daily on data.gov.hk, confirms anecdotal reports from travel-management companies of capacity crunches on peak weekday mornings at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line. Passenger numbers have been rising steadily since the full lifting of pandemic-era testing rules last year, but the July spike is noteworthy: Mainland visitor volumes were up 18 % week-on-week, while ‘Other Visitors’—a proxy for long-haul leisure and business travellers—rose 12 %. Airport Authority sources say average immigration-clearance times at HKIA hit 19 minutes during the evening bank on 22 July, compared with a pre-pandemic norm of 12 minutes. For corporate mobility teams, the figures translate into longer door-to-door transfer times and potential missed connections on same-day Shenzhen factory visits. Companies may need to re-evaluate whether to route staff through the Heung Yuen Wai Control Point, which currently operates below 60 % of capacity. The data also bolster the case for enrolling frequent travellers in Hong Kong’s e-Channel services; authorities relaxed eligibility for frequent visitors earlier this year, but uptake among U.S. and EU passport holders remains low. Given the daily cadence of the dataset, travel-management systems can integrate the API to trigger real-time alerts when throughput at a chosen control point exceeds a set threshold—allowing dynamic routing via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge or maritime ferries from Shekou.
