Greece Reopens Six Schengen Visa Centres Across China
The Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in Beijing has formally confirmed that all outsourced Schengen visa application centres serving its jurisdiction have resumed operations as of 24 July 2026. Chinese citizens and third-country nationals residing in 18 northern, western and central provinces can once again submit short-stay (Type-C) applications for Greece – and, by extension, for the entire Schengen area – in Beijing, Shenyang, Jinan, Chongqing, Chengdu and Xi’an. The announcement ends a five-month pause that began in February while the Greek authorities renegotiated their contract with the external service provider GVCW. During the suspension, applicants had to travel to Shanghai, Guangzhou or Hong Kong or apply through another Schengen partner, creating costly delays for tour operators, business travellers and students preparing for the autumn intake at European universities. Under the relaunched system, biometric data previously captured remains valid for 59 months, meaning most repeat travellers can apply by courier without appearing in person. Peak-season appointment quotas have been doubled, and premium-processing desks will pilot in Beijing and Chengdu from August, promising 48-hour decision times for time-critical travellers such as MICE delegations and ship’s crew. Greek officials stressed that the reopening dovetails with Beijing’s newly expanded unilateral 30-day visa-free scheme for UK and Canadian passport-holders, predicting a “dual-direction rebound” in two-way tourism. Travel agencies in Beijing have already reported a 40 % week-on-week jump in package enquiries for Greece’s Aegean islands and Mediterranean cruise departures. For global-mobility managers, the key takeaway is that Chinese assignees heading to EU headquarters in Athens or onward to the wider Schengen zone once again have an on-shore application channel, reducing both lead time and compliance risk for short-term projects.
