The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its China travel advisory on 24 July 2026, flagging fresh restrictions on the recreational and commercial use of drones in mainland China. The notice states that operators must now register all devices over 250 g, obtain a remote-pilot certificate and avoid no-fly zones that include most urban centres, border areas and venues for major events. The added guidance comes after several cases this spring in which foreign tourists were fined or briefly detained for flying consumer drones near military compounds in Fujian and Hainan. Under the amended Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) rules, unregistered flights can attract penalties of up to CNY 50,000 and confiscation of equipment, while footage deemed sensitive could trigger national-security investigations. For corporate travellers, the stricter framework particularly affects media crews, construction-site inspectors and surveyors who routinely carry unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Firms are advised to contract locally licensed operators or apply for flight plans at least 10 working days in advance through the CAAC’s U-Cloud platform. Companies holding China’s new Unified Business Licence can streamline the application but must still coordinate with local public-security bureaus for ground-control approvals. The FCDO retained its overall travel-risk rating but reminds visitors that violations of Chinese regulations can lead to exit bans that delay departure. Employers sending staff to China should update pre-trip briefings and insurance cover to reflect potential confiscation of high-value UAV assets and associated project delays.
