Canada updates travel advisory for Poland, urges travellers to verify possible internal border checks
Global Affairs Canada refreshed its travel advice for Poland on 23 July, adding wording that travellers “may be required to pass through immigration controls when entering Poland, even if arriving from another Schengen country.” The update aligns Ottawa’s guidance with Poland’s ongoing internal border checks with Germany and Lithuania and references the security spill-over from the war in neighbouring Ukraine. While the overall risk level remains at “Normal security precautions,” the advisory highlights potential delays at land crossings and reminds Canadian citizens to carry valid ID at all times. The notice matters to the roughly 100,000 Canadian business and leisure visitors who enter Poland each year, many via connecting flights or rail from Berlin. Carriers running coach tours and MICE events have already reported instances where passengers without passports were denied boarding on German-origin trains bound for Warsaw. Employers sending staff from Canada or Western Europe should therefore ensure travellers carry a passport, not just a national ID, and build extra time into itineraries that involve overland segments. Mobility teams should also watch for cascading effects on neighbouring Czech and Slovak routes, as operators may reroute services to avoid German-Polish crossings during peak hours. The advisory follows similar language issued by the UK FCDO earlier this year and illustrates how unilateral Schengen measures can ripple through long-haul travel planning. Companies should keep an eye on further edits, which Global Affairs normally flags first under the ‘Entry and Exit Requirements’ tab.
