Visitors picking up a rental car in Rome’s seaside municipality of Fiumicino—from which Leonardo da Vinci Airport takes its name—will now find most on-street bays marked with blue lines and subject to payment. Following a late-night council vote, the town introduced a 12-month pilot of tariffed parking on 25 July across eight high-demand areas, including Via della Torre Clementina and the Lungomare della Salute. The scheme covers 1,596 standard spaces plus 69 accessible bays, with payment required daily between 09:00 and 22:00. The first 30 minutes are free once per day, after which the rate is €1 per hour (maximum four hours) or a flat €5 day ticket. Enforcement uses licence-plate-recognition technology, eliminating physical tickets—an Italian first for a small municipality. Residents, long-term renters and local artisans are eligible for up to two free permits per household or business. Electric vehicles do not receive blanket exemptions; free parking is allowed only while actively charging at the dedicated e-mobility stalls installed along the waterfront. Servizi Civici S.p.A., the municipal in-house company, has installed 29 new multi-language pay-and-display machines and will field roving customer-service stewards during the launch phase. For business travellers, the change means that previously free kerbside slots around the airport hotels and seafood restaurants now carry a cost—and fines start at €45. Mobility managers should update ground-transport policies, especially for crews with layovers who often leave vehicles in Fiumicino town. Clients collecting hire cars late at night must still pay from 09:00 next morning; most rental firms will offer pre-paid vouchers on request. The pilot runs until 31 July 2027, after which the council will decide whether to extend, modify or scrap the system based on occupancy and revenue data. Early adopter feedback is being gathered via a QR-code survey displayed on every meter, offering a rare chance for corporate fleets to influence future parking policy at Italy’s busiest international gateway.
