With Germany bracing for its second major heatwave of the summer, infrastructure subsidiary DB InfraGO has activated a new contingency framework designed to make rail operations more predictable when temperatures top 35 °C. From Thursday, 30 July through at least 6 August, train-path cancellation fees in the national track-access contract will be suspended, allowing passenger and freight operators to thin out schedules without the usual financial penalty. The measure, announced on 27 July, was developed after late-June temperatures buckled overhead lines and rails, causing hundreds of cancellations and missed connections for business travellers. By encouraging operators to pre-emptively withdraw selected services—and by giving regional transport authorities (Aufgabenträger) the final say—DB says it can create operational “reserves” that make the remaining timetable far more reliable. The first nationwide heat-window starts this week, while five southern Länder, where mercury levels are already soaring, have opted to begin on Wednesday. For corporate mobility managers the policy brings two immediate advantages. First, companies receive earlier confirmation of which ICE or IC services will operate, enabling staff to re-book rather than gamble on journeys that might be cancelled at the last minute. Second, rail operators gain planning certainty to redeploy rolling stock and crews, limiting knock-on delays. Freight forwarders are likewise encouraged to shift sensitive cargo to cooler night-time slots or road alternatives. DB InfraGO CEO Philipp Nagl framed the move as a climate-adaptation milestone: “Only if we act before the rails overheat can we stabilise the entire system.” The company is already mapping similar windows for autumn storms and heavy snowfall. Longer term, DB is accelerating installation of temperature-resistant track materials and automated monitoring sensors, but those upgrades will not be complete before 2030. Until then, the new heat-wave protocol could become a recurring feature of the German summer timetable.
