FAA Awards $23.7 Million to Dallas Love Field for Family-Friendly Terminal Upgrades
Transportation Secretary Chris Duffy announced on July 28 that the Federal Aviation Administration will invest nearly $24 million in terminal improvements at Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL). The grant, issued under the Bipartisan Airport Infrastructure Program, will fund larger nursing rooms, upgraded play areas, and expanded rest-zones designed to make the airport more accommodating for families and travelers with reduced mobility. Love Field is a major regional hub for corporate flyers, handling more than 17 million passengers annually and serving as Southwest Airlines’ headquarters. Post-pandemic surveys showed a sharp increase in passengers traveling with young children and elderly relatives—trends that prompted city officials to prioritize inclusive design elements in the airport’s 2030 master plan. Improvements will include widening of connecting corridors to ease wheelchair navigation, installation of adult-size changing tables, and the addition of sensory-friendly quiet rooms—a first for a U.S. medium-hub airport. Officials said construction will be phased to avoid peak travel periods and is projected to create 280 local jobs. For mobility managers, the project signals continued federal commitment to upgrading secondary airports that play outsized roles in domestic business travel. Love Field’s proximity to downtown Dallas means relocation assignees and frequent travelers will benefit directly from shorter security lines and enhanced amenities compared with Dallas/Fort Worth International. The FAA grant also requires the airport to track service-level metrics—including average wait times for special-assistance requests—data that could inform future accessibility standards nationwide. Companies may wish to incorporate the new facilities into their employee-travel guidance once upgrades come online in late 2027.
