India’s Digi Yatra programme—an initiative that lets passengers breeze through domestic airport checkpoints using a facial-recognition–based digital token—took an important inclusive step on 4 August 2026. The Digi Yatra Foundation quietly rolled out support for the driving licence stored in the government’s DigiLocker app as an additional, fully-verified ID credential. Until now, new users could enrol only with an Aadhaar number, a requirement that critics said excluded foreign residents, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card-holders and some privacy-conscious Indian nationals. By allowing the ubiquitous driving licence, the platform dramatically expands the eligible pool of travellers and removes a key adoption barrier. Digi Yatra was launched in December 2022 and is already operational at 14 of India’s busiest airports—including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata—for domestic departures. After a one-time online enrolment, the system generates an encrypted biometric token linked to the passenger’s boarding pass; at the airport, travellers walk through dedicated e-gates where cameras match their face to the token, eliminating the need for paper ID and cutting average checkpoint time from six minutes to under 40 seconds. According to the Airports Authority of India, more than 9 million passengers—largely frequent business flyers—used the lanes in the first half of 2026. The addition of an alternative identity document is significant for several reasons. First, corporate mobility managers have complained that mandatory Aadhaar verification created friction for expatriates and short-term assignees who lacked the 12-digit number. Driving-licence support means employers can now include more categories of staff—such as foreign experts on Employment (E) visas or intra-company transferees—on their preferred “fast-track” itineraries without manual intervention at security. Second, privacy advocates had expressed unease about linking Aadhaar, a multipurpose government database, with commercial travel data. A non-Aadhaar option addresses some of those concerns and aligns the programme with the forthcoming rules of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which emphasise purpose limitation and user choice. From an operational standpoint, the Digi Yatra Foundation says the backend architecture already supports multiple identity attributes, so adding the driving licence required only a software update and additional data-validation APIs with DigiLocker. The expanded credential list also lays the groundwork for the long-anticipated Phase 2 of the scheme: extending biometric processing to arriving international passengers under the Fast-Track Immigration–Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP). Officials hint that passports stored in DigiLocker could be next, potentially creating a seamless curb-to-gate experience for both domestic and cross-border flyers by early 2027. For mobility professionals, the immediate takeaway is practical. Companies should update their India travel policies and pre-trip checklists to reflect the new ID option, encourage travellers to download DigiLocker before departure, and consider bulk-enrolling frequent flyers to capitalise on shorter queues at peak hours. As more airports and identity documents are added, Digi Yatra is fast becoming a model of how digital identity can ease passenger flows in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
