Bangladesh’s ministries of foreign affairs and expatriate welfare have opened urgent talks with Abu Dhabi after more than 4,000 Bangladeshi nationals had their UAE residence visas revoked without explanation. The Daily Star reported on 14 September that cancellation notices began arriving in July, leaving long-term residents—including business owners—stranded during home leave. Workers told reporters they received e-mails or SMS messages from sponsors and immigration authorities stating simply that their visas were void. With no stated cause—such as criminal violations or documentation lapses—many fear losing livelihoods built over decades in the Emirates. Community leaders have given Dhaka until 22 September to find a solution before staging protests. Analysts note the timing: regional security tensions and tightening compliance checks have prompted Gulf states to scrutinise foreign residents more closely. The episode underscores the precarious status of lower-income expatriates whose work permits are tied to employer sponsorship and renewable at the discretion of immigration authorities. For corporate mobility teams the case is a stark reminder to monitor employees’ visa validity—especially when staff travel home—and to maintain alternative deployment plans. HR should also review whether affected employees qualify for new UAE visa types (such as self-sponsored freelance permits) that offer greater independence from employers. Bangladesh, meanwhile, is lobbying for reinstatement or at least a clear articulation of grounds for cancellation. Should the UAE maintain its position, some Bangladeshi workers may seek transfers to Saudi Arabia or Malaysia, potentially tightening an already competitive Gulf labour market.
