A new AfD motion entitled “Germany’s Borders Securely Protect—Introduce AI Border Guard Now” (document 21/6822) entered the Bundestag agenda on 14 September and will receive its first reading on 23 September. The proposal calls for a three-tier ‘Digital Border Shield’ using drones, infrared sensors and AI-assisted video analytics to detect irregular crossings in real time. The far-right party argues that manpower-intensive passport checks cannot be sustained indefinitely and that technology can cut costs while tightening security. It wants a national analytics centre to fuse live sensor feeds with data from the Schengen Information System, enabling instant alerts to patrol units. Critics across the political spectrum warn of privacy risks and algorithmic bias. The Greens note that heat-sensor fencing on the Greek–Turkish border has produced thousands of false alarms. Business associations are also cautious: while faster, risk-based screening could shorten wait times, any faulty system that blocks legitimate freight traffic would hurt just-in-time supply chains. If sent to committee, the motion could influence the Interior Ministry’s forthcoming ‘Smart Borders’ strategy, due in December. Companies involved in security tech, AI and telecoms should monitor the debate for potential procurement opportunities worth hundreds of millions of euros.
