Corporate travel planners awoke to welcome news on 14 September 2026: Lufthansa’s pilots, cabin crew and ground staff are all at work and no strike date is on the calendar. The carrier’s turbulent spring—five walk-outs in February and April—has given way to a rare window of stability that is expected to last at least until mid-November, when an arbitration panel will publish its recommendations on the contentious cockpit pension scheme. According to the independent travel-risk tracker Wego, Lufthansa’s last strike day was 17 April. Since then the Vereinigung Cockpit union has agreed to triple-track arbitration covering mainline, cargo and regional pilots, while flight-attendant union UFO resumed wage talks in early September. Ground staff remain bound by a peace clause after securing a 4.6 percent raise in March. For mobility managers the cessation of industrial action means that Frankfurt and Munich hubs are operating their full schedules at the height of the autumn trade-fair season. Companies that shifted premium traffic to oneworld or SkyTeam carriers in the spring are gradually returning to Lufthansa to regain network flexibility and status benefits. Travel buyers should, however, keep contingency clauses in their hotel and conference contracts: if the arbitrator’s proposal is rejected, pilots could lawfully strike again with 48-hour notice from 15 November onwards. The update also clarifies compensation rules. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers whose flights are cancelled by an airline’s own staff are entitled to €250–€600 in cash on top of rerouting or refund options. The last round of strikes generated more than €45 million in payouts, according to Lufthansa’s first-quarter report. Looking ahead, the bigger scheduling threat may come not from labour unrest but from Lufthansa’s decision to wind down its CityLine regional subsidiary. The group intends to redistribute those routes to the new CityAirline and contract feeders, a process that could shift flight numbers without notice even in the absence of strikes.
