Spain’s Ministry of Transport has announced the full closure of the Somport road tunnel—the main trans-Pyrenean route linking Aragón with Pau in France—from 16:00 on Monday 14 September until 17:00 on Saturday 19 September. French authorities are carrying out rock-slope stabilisation works on the RN-1134, forcing traffic onto the old N-330a mountain pass. Light vehicles can detour via the 1,632-metre Somport Pass, but that route itself will be closed between 10:00 and 16:00 on Tuesday 15 September for resurfacing, leaving no alternative during that six-hour window. Trucks carrying dangerous goods must divert hundreds of kilometres west to Biriatou (Basque Country) or east to La Jonquera (Catalonia). Logistics operators say the five-day outage could add 6-8 hours to Spain–France road journeys and may push urgent consignments onto rail or airfreight. Fresh-produce exporters from Zaragoza’s agri-logistics hub have asked clients to accept rescheduled delivery slots, while insurance brokers warn that using mountain roads voids standard CMR policies unless explicit rider clauses are added. Companies with posted workers driving the route should provide winter-tyre certificates—even in September—and remind staff that mobile-roaming charges differ once they cross into France, which could complicate geolocation tracking. The closure highlights Spain’s dependence on a handful of Pyrenean crossings; industry associations are renewing calls for EU funding to twin-bore the tunnel and integrate it into the Atlantic Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
