Abu Dhabi’s flag carrier and the operator of the national rail network signed an MoU on 16 September to study integrated booking, baggage and shuttle services linking Zayed International Airport with the passenger-rail station at Mohammed bin Zayed City. The goal is to create a “one-ticket” journey that connects incoming flights to train services reaching Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates. The agreement comes six months after Etihad Rail launched its first passenger service and reflects the government’s push for multimodal mobility under the National Transport Strategy 2050. For business travellers, a through-ticket could cut surface-transfer times and reduce reliance on road transport during peak hours. Etihad Airways’ chief revenue officer Arik De said the partnership will “support tourism growth and economic diversification,” while Etihad Rail noted that aviation-rail synergies would lower carbon emissions per passenger-kilometre. If implemented, the model could extend to seat-inventory sharing and interline baggage, similar to Lufthansa-Deutsche Bahn cooperation in Germany. Mobility advisers should watch pilot projects scheduled for Q1 2027: early indications suggest premium-class rail coaches timed to meet Etihad’s evening bank, with lounge access bundled into the fare—a potential perk for relocating staff who need weekend access to other emirates without renting cars.
