Travellers transiting Indian airports will notice a noticeably lighter paper trail after the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) rolled out five technology-driven reforms on 16 September 2026. In a public advisory amplified by NDTV, the BoI highlighted a suite of changes designed to slash queues and modernise identity checks for the country’s rapidly growing international throughput, which crossed 71 million passengers last fiscal year. Headline change is the launch of an electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) card. OCI holders can now download a secure QR-coded credential to their smartphones and present it alongside their passports, removing the need to carry the plastic card. Complementing this, BoI scrapped mandatory re-issuance of a physical OCI each time the holder renews a passport or updates personal particulars; the data can instead be amended online and the refreshed e-OCI re-downloaded, saving roughly ₹7,900 in re-issuance fees per card. For all departing passengers, immigration officers will now accept mobile boarding passes—unstamped—bringing India in line with global ‘paperless terminal’ norms. Frequent flyers also benefit from a nationwide expansion of the Fast-Track Immigration–Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP), which doubles the number of biometric e-gates to 28 across 14 airports, including recent deployments in Lucknow and Navi Mumbai. The final pillar is a new e-Arrival Card portal, allowing foreign nationals to submit arrival information up to 72 hours before landing, a move expected to cut data-entry bottlenecks and improve security analytics. Corporate mobility managers see immediate upside. “Digital OCI reduces the single biggest pain-point for our India-based staff returning from regional meetings—lost or damaged cards,” said Priya Ramanathan, APAC mobility lead at a Fortune 100 IT firm. Airlines likewise welcome the shift; Indigo estimates the boarding-pass change alone will shave 4–6 seconds per customer at document check, translating to meaningful turnaround gains on tightly-scheduled international sectors. Travellers should note that paper boarding passes remain valid and that e-OCI is optional, though strongly encouraged. The BoI also reminds users that e-Arrival Cards are compulsory for OCI holders as well as visa-bearing foreigners, and must be re-filed on each trip. Failure to submit within the 72-hour window can still result in manual form-filling and delays. Mobility teams are therefore urged to update pre-trip checklists and traveller training materials immediately.
