‘Go Hong Kong’ app lets frequent visitors finish e-Channel enrolment before they fly
The Immigration Department has quietly rolled out a new mobile application—"Go Hong Kong"—that allows eligible frequent visitors to complete biometric registration for e-Channel clearance on their smartphones before departure. Announced late on 16 September and reported by the Hong Kong China News Agency the next day, the app uses NFC to read the passport chip, optical character recognition to capture personal data and a selfie match to verify identity. Approval is delivered by push notification and email within hours. To qualify, travellers must be 18 or older, hold a multiple-entry visa or visa-waiver passport recognised by Hong Kong, have no adverse immigration record and have entered via Hong Kong International Airport at least twice in the past 24 months. Once authorised, passengers can walk straight to any automated gate on arrival, shaving 10–20 minutes off peak-hour queues. The initiative matters for business mobility. Executives shuttling between Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo—who often lack time for on-site enrolment—can now secure fast-track clearance during a layover. Conference organisers say the tool will help smooth delegate flows ahead of major events such as the Asian Financial Forum and the Web3 Summit, both expecting record overseas attendance in early 2027. From a policy standpoint, the app signals Hong Kong’s intent to push clearance procedures upstream and onto personal devices, aligning with global “mobile passport” trends adopted by the United States, Australia and the EU. Immigration officials hinted that future versions may integrate boarding-pass tokenisation so arriving passengers can move from gate to taxi rank without presenting documents.
