Hong Kong launches “Go Hong Kong” app allowing visitors to complete e-Channel enrolment before arrival
In a move that will be warmly welcomed by business travellers and frequent flyers, Hong Kong’s Immigration Department on 16 September unveiled the new “Go Hong Kong” mobile application. The free app lets holders of eligible electronic passports finish the entire e-Channel enrolment process on their own smartphones—complete with biometric capture via NFC and camera—before they board a flight to the city. Previously, visitors had to queue at airport registration counters on arrival. Once pre-enrolled, travellers can walk straight to any automated immigration gate, scan the same passport they used in the app, and complete clearance in about 20 seconds. The Department estimates this will shave at least 15–20 minutes off the typical arrival experience during peak periods at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). A pilot carried out with select frequent-visitor passport groups earlier this year recorded a 40 per cent reduction in landside congestion at peak evening bank times. The soft launch currently covers travellers who have visited Hong Kong by air at least twice in the past 24 months and who hold an e-passport from one of 15 jurisdictions (including Australia, the UK, Singapore, the US and EU member states). Officials say the list will be expanded in phases, with Belt-and-Road partner countries given priority. Corporate mobility managers can already batch-enrol executives by using the app’s API for travel-programme integration. The Immigration Department emphasised that all personal data is stored only on the user’s device and in encrypted form until the moment it is transmitted to government servers over a secure channel. Travellers concerned about roaming charges can complete registration over Wi-Fi before departure; no internet connection is needed at the gate itself. For companies relocating staff to Hong Kong, the new self-service channel means faster onboarding and less time spent in queues—an important competitive edge as the city tries to rebuild its position as Asia’s business hub. Travel managers should update pre-trip communications, ensure eligible employees download the app, and remind them to use the same passport at the gate that was used during mobile enrolment.
