115 Palestinian students denied Irish study visas as deadline passes
The Department of Justice has confirmed that, as of 10 September, 115 visa applications from Palestinian students were refused while only 50 were granted for the 2026–27 academic year. With the 17 September deadline for registration now expired, many offer-holders will be unable to take up places at Irish universities. The refusal rate sharply contrasts with 2025, when 122 approvals and just 22 refusals were recorded. Student-led protests organised by Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union saw campaigners chain themselves to the Department’s offices and blockade entrances for 20 hours on 16–17 September, accusing officials of back-tracking on promises made after last year’s Gaza evacuation scheme. University international-office directors worry the pattern could undermine Ireland’s Global Education Strategy, which sets ambitious targets for diversifying the non-EEA student body. Palestinian applicants typically pursue STEM master’s programmes funded by EU-sponsored scholarships; their absence may leave universities scrambling to fill unfunded seats just weeks before lectures begin. From a mobility perspective, employers running graduate-placement pipelines with Irish universities should note potential talent-pool gaps and anticipate deferrals. Immigration consultants advise that rejected students still have an eight-week window to appeal, but late arrivals face accommodation shortages and missed orientation. Activists are urging Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris to issue a special concession similar to the Ukrainian student pathway introduced in 2024. The Department insists each case is adjudicated on its merits, citing security checks that cannot be accelerated.
