The six-week suspension forced carriers to allocate extra staff at hubs such as Barcelona-El Prat and Palma de Mallorca, adding an estimated €4.7 million in operational costs and lengthening arrival processes by up to 25 minutes. Tour operators complained that the uncertainty deterred last-minute city-break bookings, with the Spanish Confederation of Hotels reporting a 6 % drop in Italian arrivals versus September 2025. For business-travel programme managers, tonight’s expiry restores normal Schengen procedures: Italian passport-holders and EU-resident third-country nationals will once again benefit from direct air-bridge or sea-gangway disembarkation and e-gate processing. Nevertheless, mobility teams should keep contingency plans handy, including advising travellers to carry proof of accommodation and health insurance, as bilateral tensions over health measures remain possible during the autumn flu season. Companies running regular rotations between Milan, Rome and Spanish manufacturing sites in Catalonia and Valencia may wish to renegotiate SLAs with crew-transfer providers to include flexibility clauses for any future snap-back of controls.
