Speaking on the margins of the Pordenone summit, Minister for Relations with Parliament Luca Ciriani released fresh Interior-Ministry statistics on 22 September that Rome hopes will justify continuing border controls with Slovenia. Since October 2023, Italian police have inspected 1.6 million people and 750,000 vehicles at the north-eastern frontier, intercepting more than 12,000 migrants deemed to be in the country irregularly and arresting 711 individuals—260 of them for suspected people-smuggling. Officials highlighted a 40 percent rise in interceptions since January, attributing the spike to secondary movements along the Balkan route after Serbia tightened visa-free entry for several Asian and African nationalities. According to the ministry, nearly 4,000 of those stopped this year filed asylum claims on the spot, straining reception centres in Gorizia and Trieste that were already running at 110 percent of capacity. Business-mobility managers should note that the figures will almost certainly be used domestically to defend an extension of the Schengen derogation beyond its current 18 December expiry. Any prolongation would require Italy to provide the Commission with a proportionality analysis and an end date; the new data point to a likely request for a further six-month renewal. For corporate travellers, the operational impact remains modest—document checks typically add less than half an hour—but logistics firms moving just-in-time components between Veneto factories and Slovenian ports report higher costs for drivers held in inspection queues. Companies with critical shipments may wish to reroute via Tarvisio–Arnoldstein (Austria) or consider early-morning slots when traffic is lighter. Ciriani reiterated that Italy’s ‘strategic objective’ is a full return to Schengen, but only “once technological and legal safeguards are in place.” Until then, the numbers released this week are likely to feature prominently in Rome’s case for keeping the guards on duty.
