France Activates Temporary ‘ZIT PAPE’ No-Fly Zone Over Lourdes for Papal Mass

The French Ministry of the Armed Forces and the Directorate-General for Civil Aviation (DGAC) have activated a temporary prohibited zone (ZIT PAPE) covering a 14.8-km radius around Lourdes from 07:00-23:00 local time on 27 September 2026, coinciding with Pope Leo XIV’s open-air Mass that is expected to draw more than 150,000 pilgrims. The measure, published as SUP-AIP 213/2026 and confirmed by an Arrêté in the Journal Officiel, bans all manned and unmanned flights except those expressly authorised by air-defence authorities. The no-fly zone forms part of an extensive air-security package that also deploys Rafale fighter jets, Fennec helicopters with snipers, ground-based anti-drone units and airborne surveillance aircraft. Similar zones were put in place over Paris and Metz earlier in the four-day papal visit, but today’s restriction is the most extensive because of Lourdes’ proximity to the Pyrenees and its limited diversion airports. Airlines operating to and from Pau-Pyrénées (PUF) and Tarbes–Lourdes–Pyrénées (LDE) have re-routed or rescheduled flights, adding up to 25 minutes of extra flight time on some domestic sectors. Business-aviation slots for Bordeaux and Toulouse were fully allocated within hours of the notice, forcing corporate travellers to consider Bilbao or even Biarritz for same-day meetings. Ground handlers report heightened demand for last-mile chauffeur services as travellers attempt to bypass road closures near the sanctuary. The timing also collides with end-of-quarter corporate travel, meaning French multinationals relocating staff or hosting clients must factor in longer journey times and potential overnight stays. Risk-management teams are advising employees to carry printed itineraries and allow additional screening time at regional airports, where security personnel have been redeployed to Lourdes. For mobility managers, the key take-away is to check NOTAMs up to departure, inform travellers of the drone ban (even recreational), and pre-book surface transport. The DGAC says normal airspace configuration will resume at 23:59, but late-evening lifting of restrictions could still push curfew limits at slot-constrained airports such as Paris-Orly.
