French armed forces deploy nationwide air-defence bubble for papal visit, affecting flight-planning for business jets

The Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed on 25 September that it has activated a layered air-defence posture covering Paris, Lourdes and Metz until 28 September. The system combines Crotale NG batteries, RAFALE CAP patrols and GM 200 radar units to detect and interdict non-co-operative aircraft, including drones. For the business-aviation community the key impact is mandatory flight-plan pre-validation: operators must file 48 hours in advance and carry proof of slot authorisation when landing at secondary airfields such as Toussus-le-Noble or Nîmes-Garons. NBAA Europe says at least six corporate jets were denied entry into the Paris TMA yesterday for missing the new codeword field in Item 18 of their ICAO FPL. The air-defence bubble also restricts drone deliveries, an emerging segment for express logistics in Île-de-France. DHL and UPS have suspended same-day medical-supply corridors between Roissy and central Paris until Tuesday morning, directing shippers to use bike couriers instead. While the deployment is routine for state visits, defence officials hint that the exercise doubles as a rehearsal for the Paris 2027 World Expo. Airlines should therefore expect similar layered restrictions during next summer’s test events and begin scenario-planning now.
