Salzburg’s Citizenship Department Announces December Relocation, Temporary Service Restrictions

Foreign nationals pursuing Austrian citizenship in the state of Salzburg will need to adjust their application plans this winter. On 29 September 2026 the provincial government confirmed that its central citizenship department (Referat Wahlen und Staatsbürgerschaft) will move to Salzburg’s new Landes­dienstleistungs­zentrum, close to the main rail station, between 2 and 8 December. During the six-day move the office will only be reachable by telephone and will not accept in-person appointments. Applicants who need to send documents by post must instead use a temporary P.O. box address that will be in operation for the duration of the move. From 9 December the new customer counters will open at Kaiserschützenstraße 5. All future in-person filings—including first-time citizenship petitions, retention applications before taking up another passport, and status determinations—will require an appointment at the new premises. The authority stresses that walk-ins will be turned away and urges applicants to use the online pre-application tool to receive a personalised checklist of required evidence before booking a slot. For businesses and relocation managers the temporary shutdown means that any staff transfers or naturalisation cases with December deadlines should be brought forward or postponed. Because Austrian citizenship applications are paper-heavy and still require an oath in front of an official, missing an appointment window can delay cases by months. Advisers should alert clients to send supplementary documents early and to avoid courier deliveries during the blackout week. Long-term, the move should streamline processes. The Landes­dienstleistungs­zentrum is bringing 1,400 provincial employees from 25 scattered locations under one roof and promises upgraded digital infrastructure. The new building has a dedicated security lane and larger waiting areas, which officials say will reduce queues and improve data protection. The relocation is also a pilot for other provinces that plan to consolidate services ahead of the 2027 rollout of Austria’s fully digital case-management platform. Practically, HR teams should update internal guidance with the new address, adjust power-of-attorney forms, and flag the restricted period in assignment timelines. Companies planning year-end naturalisations for key staff should book appointments in November or from mid-December onward, and should budget extra time for mail delivery during the peak holiday season.
