The UK Home Office has announced that 49 individuals were arrested between 22 and 24 September during “Operation Comby”, a multi-agency crackdown on gangs exploiting the Common Travel Area to move migrants from Ireland into the UK. Details released on 29 September show arrests across Belfast International Airport, Belfast Harbour and cross-channel ports in Scotland and England, with seizures including £130,000 in counterfeit electronics. Two Romanian women apprehended at Belfast airport were identified as potential trafficking victims; one has been returned to Ireland, the other detained pending repatriation. The Home Office frames the action as part of a wider 74% year-on-year surge in organised-immigration-crime arrests. It runs alongside Operation Gull, the routine enforcement programme that has netted nearly 1,000 offenders in the past 12 months. Ministers also pointed to a planned doubling of the Immigration Enforcement budget by 2029 and a 60% workforce increase. Although jurisdiction lies with UK authorities, the operation has direct implications for Irish employers and higher-education institutions that sponsor non-EEA nationals who may cross into Northern Ireland. Legal entrants risk questioning or detention if they lack proper documentation proving their right to be in the UK. Mobility teams should advise permit holders that CTA movements are subject to spot checks and ensure staff carry passports and Irish residence permits when travelling north-south. The arrests also raise the prospect of tighter carrier liability checks on Dublin–Belfast rail and bus services, potentially lengthening journey times. Businesses moving goods should anticipate short-notice delays at port security as resources are redeployed toward immigration enforcement. Irish Justice officials emphasise continued intelligence-sharing with the UK, noting that data from Ireland’s Advance Passenger Information system already feeds Operation Comby. Cross-border cooperation is expected to intensify ahead of the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation rollout and any future Irish entry-exit reforms.
