Adverse weather at Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport (TFN) forced four flights to divert on 1 October. According to airport operator Aena, an aircraft from Málaga landed in Gran Canaria, while services from A Coruña and Lanzarote rerouted to Tenerife South. A Gran Canaria–Tenerife leg also turned back. Despite the fog, operations continued and no cancellations had been reported by mid-afternoon. The diversions are a reminder that the Canary Islands’ mountainous micro-climate can suddenly disrupt schedules—an issue for offshore-energy and telecom engineers who often position via TFN for short-duration assignments. Car-hire firms at Tenerife South reported a spike in last-minute one-way rentals as passengers sought ground transfers back to the island’s north. Travellers connecting onward to Madrid or Barcelona should monitor flight trackers, as previous fog events at TFN have led to knock-on delays across Iberia’s network. EU 261 compensation is unlikely because weather counts as an extraordinary circumstance, but airlines must still provide meals and, if necessary, accommodation. Aena has invested in improved ILS Category III equipment at TFN, but the hilly terrain limits its effectiveness in dense fog. Mobility managers may wish to build a weather buffer into itineraries during the October-December shoulder season.
