Spanish Embassy in Washington outsources all visa submissions to BLS from 1 October
The Consular Section of Spain’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., has announced that, with effect from 1 October 2026, all national- and Schengen-visa applications from residents of its jurisdiction (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina) must be lodged by appointment at the BLS Spain Visa Application Centre rather than directly at the embassy. The change, published on the embassy website, exempts only diplomatic, courtesy and official-passport holders. Applicants will use BLS’s online portal to book time-slots and pay a US $20 service fee in addition to consular charges. Documents will be couriered daily to the embassy for decision, but collection of approved visas and passports will also take place at the BLS centre. The consulate warns that incomplete files will be rejected at the counter and that walk-ins are no longer accepted. For universities, multinationals and immigration lawyers used to batch-filing student and work-permit dossiers directly with consular staff, the outsourcing means adjusting internal checklists to BLS document-scanning standards and allowing at least one extra business day for courier transfer. Peak-season student applicants are advised to submit no later than 15 days before travel to avoid missing programme start dates. The move aligns Washington with other Spanish consulates in the United States (New York and Chicago) that outsourced earlier this year, and is expected to free up diplomatic staff for Ceuta-related emergency workload. However, applicant feedback from those jurisdictions highlights issues such as limited appointment availability and inconsistent document pre-screening. HR teams sponsoring intra-company transferees should therefore monitor appointment calendars closely and consider parallel filings in alternate jurisdictions where employees have legal residence. BLS said it is prepared to handle 150 applications per day and will add Saturday slots if demand exceeds capacity.
