Visa-Free Entry Scheme Drives 26.8 % Surge in Foreign Arrivals January–August
Fresh NIA data released alongside Golden Week figures offer the clearest evidence yet that China’s unilateral visa-free programme is reshaping inbound mobility. From January to August 2026, 23.72 million foreign travellers entered China visa-free—up 26.8 percent year on year and representing nearly four fifths of all foreign arrivals. The scheme began as a 15-day waiver for six European and Asian countries in December 2023 but has ballooned to cover 50 nations across five continents, including Australia, Saudi Arabia and—most recently—Sweden. Separately, China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy now spans 57 countries and 65 ports of entry, giving multinationals additional routing flexibility. Travel industry platforms report that the top beneficiary markets are Germany, Malaysia and the United Kingdom, each showing double-digit increases in China-bound bookings since July. On Ctrip, searches for ‘business class to Shanghai’ from visa-exempt markets were up 38 percent in September versus the same month last year. For employers the expansion means shorter lead-times for deploying project teams and executives. Global tech firm ABB told Xinhua it had cut project mobilisation in Shenzhen from three weeks to six days because engineers from Milan can now enter without paperwork. Nevertheless, HR departments should note that visa-free entrants must register residence within 24 hours and cannot convert to work permits in-country; conversions still require an exit and re-entry on the appropriate Z-visa. Observers expect Beijing to evaluate reciprocal moves from partner nations before deciding whether to make the waivers permanent beyond 31 December 2026. Companies are advised to monitor individual passport eligibility and stay-length caps, which vary across different unilateral and bilateral frameworks.
