EU Register Confirms Austria’s Internal Border Checks Extended to 15 March 2027
The European Commission’s Schengen monitoring portal, updated on 10 October, reconfirmed Austria’s decision to keep internal land-border controls with Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia in place for a further six months – until 15 March 2027. Vienna justifies the measure by citing irregular migration flows on the Balkan route, pressure on its asylum-reception capacity and spill-over security risks from Russia’s war against Ukraine and unrest in the Middle East. The controls, first reintroduced in 2015, now operate as a “mobile cordon” rather than 24/7 booth checks; travellers report random stops up to 30 km inside the frontier. For businesses the extension means continued spot checks on company coaches and shuttle vans, potential delays for just-in-time deliveries and – most importantly for HR – ongoing requirements for third-country assignees to carry physical residence cards when travelling to neighbouring states. Unlike airport departures, land and river crossings cannot yet read the new ID Austria digital credential. Compliance teams should brief staff that: • A passport or national ID remains mandatory when driving to Vienna from Bratislava or Brno. • Posted-worker notifications for construction teams moving equipment across the border may face inspection. • EU Blue Card and Red-White-Red card holders should keep their plastic permits on them even within Schengen. The Commission notes that Austria must submit a fresh risk assessment before any further prolongation. Parallel negotiations on the Schengen Borders Code reform could impose stricter proportionality tests, but for now the business-mobility landscape remains status quo.
