Engineering Works Cancel Cross-Border Trains on Zurich–Munich Route from 12 October
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has issued an urgent travel bulletin confirming that construction on the German side of the Zurich–Munich corridor will heavily disrupt services on 12 October 2026 and for several weeks thereafter. All EuroCity trains between Lindau-Reutin and Munich are cancelled on Monday, with rail-replacement coaches bridging the gap. From 12 October to 6 November, further speed restrictions and intermittent closures will extend journey times by up to 60 minutes and force the early departure of several evening services from Munich. The maintenance work—part of Deutsche Bahn’s long-term upgrade of the Buchloe–Munich section—coincides with ongoing projects on the Schaffhausen–Stuttgart and Schaffhausen–Singen axes, creating a domino effect on rolling-stock and crew availability. Business travellers heading to Bavarian manufacturing hubs, including Swiss-based automotive suppliers, are advised to reroute via Basel–Karlsruhe–Munich ICE services where possible or to fly into Munich and continue by rental car. SBB says SuperSaver tickets will be accepted on alternative itineraries during the outage, but seat reservations are not automatically transferred. Companies with commuter allowances should inform affected assignees that employer-funded taxi rides from Lindau to Munich will not be reimbursed unless authorised in advance. Travellers connecting to onward flights at Munich are urged to allow at least four hours between scheduled rail arrival and airport check-in. The disruption underscores the vulnerability of Switzerland’s cross-border rail links to infrastructure bottlenecks in neighbouring countries. Mobility teams should monitor the SBB timetable feed daily and activate contingency plans for urgent trips—especially around the EuroCity cancellations scheduled again for 17 and 21 October.
